• We confirm the vehicle exists. A quick lookup against the official DVSA API to make sure the registration is valid and on record.
• We watch the DVSA record. A background worker keeps an eye on the official MOT history database for that vehicle, waiting for a new test result dated today.

Privacy and Your Data

We store your registration (and, if you provided one, your email) only for as long as we’re actively watching for a result — in practice, the working day you signed up. Once your result is delivered (or the 8 PM cutoff is reached), the watch entry is cleared. We do not share your data with third parties. The MOT data comes directly from the official DVSA MOT History API; we don’t make it up, edit it, or hold it on file.

Which Vehicles Can On The Day Agent Watch?

Any vehicle on UK roads that has an MOT history with the DVSA — which means cars, vans and motorcycles are all covered, whatever the age, make or model. If the gov.uk MOT checker knows about the vehicle, so do we, because we read the same official record.

• Cars and vans — the everyday case, and the one On The Day Agent was built for.
• Motorcycles and mopeds — covered too. The result arrives in the same format, with the same pass-or-fail badge and defect list.
• Brand-new vehicles — a car under three years old hasn’t had its first MOT yet, so there’s no history to watch. Once that first test is booked in, On The Day Agent works normally on the day.
• Someone else’s vehicle — yes. MOT results are public information published by the DVSA, so you can watch a family member’s car, or the car you’re buying, without needing their documents.

Heavy goods vehicles and buses are tested under a separate DVSA scheme that isn’t part of the MOT history service, so they can’t be watched here.

When Should I Start the Watch?

On the morning of the test, once the car is booked in. A watch runs for that day only, so starting it the night before doesn’t buy you anything — and starting it after the result has already been published means you’ve missed the moment it would have told you about.

• Drop the car off, then set the watch. Thirty seconds on your phone in the garage forecourt is the ideal moment. From then on the DVSA record is checked for you automatically.
• A typical MOT takes 45–60 minutes of actual testing, but garages usually work through several vehicles in a batch, so the gap between drop-off and result is often several hours. That waiting is exactly what the agent is for.
• Watching stops at 8 PM UK time. MOT stations are almost always closed by then, so a result that hasn’t appeared by 8 PM will realistically land the next working day. We tell you when the watch stops rather than leaving you wondering.
• If the test slips to another day — the garage kept the car overnight, or a part didn’t arrive — simply start a fresh watch on the morning the test actually happens.

My Result Hasn’t Arrived Yet — What Now?

Nine times out of ten the answer is simply that the tester hasn’t submitted the result yet. Here’s the full list of reasons a result can be slow, in the order they’re worth checking:

• The test genuinely hasn’t finished. Booking your car in for 9 AM doesn’t mean it goes on the ramp at 9 AM. Many garages test in batches and submit results in the afternoon.
• The car failed and is being repaired. Some garages hold off submitting until they’ve spoken to you, and a retest after repair is recorded as its own separate entry.
• Check the registration you typed. A single wrong character means we’re watching a different vehicle — or none at all. We validate the reg against the DVSA when you sign up, which catches most typos immediately.
• It’s past 8 PM. The watch has stopped for the day. You can check the result directly with our free MOT history report at any time, including the next morning.

It Passed — But With Advisories. What Does That Mean?

An advisory is the tester flagging something that isn’t bad enough to fail the car today, but is heading that way. Your MOT is valid and you can drive away legally — advisories carry no penalty and no deadline.

They’re worth reading properly, though. An advisory for a tyre “close to the legal limit” or brake pads “wearing thin” is a fairly direct prediction of next year’s failure, and acting on it while the part is cheap beats being caught out twelve months later.
